Kildare 2-14 -
Kildare chalked up their first win of this year’s National Football League thanks to a superb four-point victory against Donegal at Croke Park on Saturday night.Goals from Tomas O’Connor and John Doyle proved crucial as the Lilies outplayed the All-Ireland champions in front of more than 28,000 people on the first night of Division 1. After a shaky start the Lilies recovered to take a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at half-time thanks to O’Connor’s 18th minute goal. Kildare stretched their lead to seven after the interval but Donegal hit six unanswered points to leave just one between the sides with 15 minutes to go.
It was then that Kildare pushed for home thanks to a slightly fortuitous goal from John Doyle but Donegal got right back into contention with sub Dermot Molloy netted for the Ulster men with four minutes left. That set up a nailbiting finish but man-of-the-match Niall Kelly settled Kildare with his third point of the game while subs Eoghan O’Flaherty and Paddy Brophy sealed the victory with two more points.
Dublin beat Cork and Tyrone got the better of Down in the two Division 1 games in the opening round of the league. Kerry travel to face Mayo in the final game of round one today.
