Sarsfields collecting the Kildare SFC last year
COUNTY champions Sarsfields will face 2011 winners Athy in a mouth-watering Kildare senior football championship round two clash.
The Sash were drawn against the Reds on Friday night (17 May) at Hawkfield, where the draw took place for round two of the senior and intermediate football championships. Both sides had comfortable round one victories – Sarsfields beating Ballymore 1-19 to 1-5 while Athy defeated last year’s beaten finalists Carbury 6-13 to 0-10. In another eye-catching round two tie, 2010 champions Moorefield will face 2008 winners Celbridge. The 2009 champions St Laurence’s face Confey while Maynooth meet Clane in the other game from the winners section. Winners of those games will guarantee themselves a place in the quarter-finals while the losers will have a second chance to make the final eight in round three.
Those sides in the round two, losers’ section are all battling for a place in the round three draw as well as trying to avoid a relegation semi-final. Last year’s beaten finalists Cabury place Nass in the tie of the round. In the intermediate championship, pre-tournament favourites Johnstownbridge meet Round Towers in the biggest game of round two.
No dates have been set for round two but as in previous seasons, it’s unlikely to take place until Kildare are out of the championship, which means late July or early August at the earliest.
