A KILDARE man who appeared on First Dates Ireland is dealing with breaking the nation’s heart this week after turning down his date on the reality show.
The much anticipated Irish version of Channel 4’s First Dates kicked off on RTÉ2 on Thursday night and it proved to be a quick hit.
29-year-old Daryel O’Brien from Carbury seemed to getting on well with his date Amy but despite audience hopes that they would set a second date he said he knew after ten minutres that this wasn’t going to be the case.
“I enjoyed the whole experience but I didn’t realise that it was a mortal sin to say no to a girl,” he said laughing.
“We got on brilliant but I knew after ten minutes that it wasn’t going any further. I enjoyed the date. I wasn’t going to sit there and be boring.
“Hey it must be testament to how good I am at a first date if she fell in love with me that quick.”
He said the pair were interviewed separately afterwards before being interviewed together.
“I said in that interview that ‘no’ I didn’t want to see her again, so I had to say the same thing when we were interviewed together.”
Despite disapproving internet comments, Daryel was out in Naas on Friday night and said he received a lot of support from people.
“It was just a bit of fun,” he said. “It was a bit of an experience, no harm. I suppose I was the first one to say no to the nation’s new sweetheart”.
Asked whether he will return for an episode he laughs.
“I don’t know. I think Amy will be asked back on before I am. Maybe it’s Big Brother next.”
