KILDARE 2-17 CARLOW 1-20
Kildare’s hopes of reaching the Alllianz National Hurling League Division 2A final are hanging by a thread after a last gasp Martin Kavanagh 65 earned Carlow a draw at St Conleths Park.
Going into the game, Kildare knew that realistically only a win would do to prolong their hopes of making a league final and that desire showed in a stirring team performance.
They led for the majority of the game and it was only a 68th minute goal by Craig Wall that got Carlow back into the game.
Kildare took the advantage early on when Paul Divilly’s shot, although going well wide of the post, was deflected into the goal by Carlow defender Richard Coady to put Kildare 1-4 to 0-4 ahead.
Carlow came back to lead 0-10 to 1-6 by the 27th minute but Divilly was again involved in Kildare’s second goal. This time he was fouled inside the square and David Reidy stepped up to convert and Kildare led 2-7 to 0-13 at half time.
During the second half, Kildare were always able to keep the scoreboard ticking over to keep Carlow at arm’s length. That was until Wall’s goal and a subsequent point by Kevin McDonald put Carlow ahead going into injury time.
That set up a grandstand finish and Kildare responded in style with long range scores from Reidy and substitute Richie Ryan putting them one clear
But ultimately the game ended in a draw when Kavanagh held his nerve.
The result suits Carlow’s requirements much better and despite another encouraging display, Joe Quaid’s Kildare were left disappointed. Kildare would need to win their final game and hope that Carlow lose to Armagh to have a chance of promotion.
