BIRTHDAY celebrations were extra special at Athy Rugby Club last week when Kildare’s first Millennium baby celebrated her 18th birthday.

Emma Whelan was born in the early hours of New Year’s Day in 2000 becoming the first baby in the county of the Millennium and the third baby born in Ireland that day.

Parents Amanda and Myles welcomed their little bundle in Portlaoise Hospital and now can’t believe how quickly the years have gone.

“It has all gone by so fast. I can’t believe 18years agao we were sitting in the hospital with her,” said mother Amanda.

“She could never go out to celebrate her birthday as no where is open on New Year’s day so for her 18th she really wanted to have a party.”

Emma is one of five children and was joined in the celebrations by her brothers and sisters Zoe, Alex, Thomas and Ruby along with family and friends.

When she was born the government presented her with a silver plaque and medal to mark the occasion. She is now studying healthcare in college and has plans to work in the medical profession.
