SAFETY concerns have been expressed about Thompson Cross at Old Kilcullen by a local candidate for the area.

Antoinette Buckley has called on Kildare Co  Council to urgently assess the cross following two recent accidents at the area and many others over the last few years.

“Following my decision to run as a local councillor for the Kilcullen area, I have spoken to a number of people living in Kilcullen and this issue has been a reoccurring one,” said Ms Buckley.

“People are worried that a serious accident could happen at any time and want to see a change. A reduction of speed limits to 50km could be one way a change would improve the safety concerns for people trying to cross the road.”

Party colleague Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin supported the call.

“The council must take action and ensure the safety of motorists by reducing the speed limit on the main road to allow cars safely pull out. We are requesting a meeting with the area engineer on site to assess options available to prevent further casualties,” she said.
