THE Kildare Public Participation Network’s Environmental College is hosting a facilitated workshop on Kildare Co Council’s Draft Climate Adaptation Strategy at Solas Bhride, Kildare Town this evening (Tuesday 2 July) at 7.30pm. Interested parties can RSVP to [email protected].

The Council recently gave notice that it had prepared a draft strategy to ensure that the key risks and vulnerabilities of climate change are properly comprehended, to bring forward in a planned and proactive way the implementation of “climate resilient” actions, and to ensure that climate adaptation considerations are “mainstreamed into all plans and policies” and integrated within all of KCC’s operations and functions.

According to the strategy, goals include establishing a Climate Action Steering Group, assessing the Council’s vehicle policy, integrating climate considerations into the design, planning and construction of roads, footpaths, bridges and other projects, and encouraging policy to support and develop the rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, among many others.

“Climate change is recognised as a global challenge with policy responses required in terms of both mitigating the causes of climate change and in adapting to the inevitable consequences of our changing climate,” the Council stated.

“The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy represents a proactive step by Kildare Co Council in the process of adaptation planning to build resilience and respond effectively to the threats posed by climate change.”

A copy of the draft strategy can be viewed online, at the Council offices in Naas or at local libraries, while the deadline for submissions or observations (in writing or by email) is 4pm next Tuesday 9 July.
