Impressive away wins against Limerick and Sligo mean that Kildare have qualfied for the quarter-finals no matter what the result but a win on Sunday will theoretically put the team on course for a much easier tie in the last eight.

A Kildare win on Sunday means they top their group, Group 1, and will play the runners up in Group 4, in the knockout stages – which will be the winners of Saturday’s game between Leitrim and Offaly. Defeat for Kildare could see them drop to second in their group and mean they play the Group 4 winners, Roscommon, in the quarter-final.

Given that Roscommon have beaten Offaly and Leitrim by 16 and 18 points respectively already in their group games, and finished ahead of Kildare in this year’s Division 3, avoiding them in the knockout stages will be significant motivation for Kildare on Sunday.

Kildare team to Down on Sunday: Dervla McGinn (Maynooth); Rachel Cribbin (Balyna), Lara Gilbert (Kildangan Nurney), Shauna Kendrick (Sarsfields), Claire Sullivan (Carbury), Sarah Munnelly (Confey), Trina Duggan (Suncroft); Siobhan O’Sullivan (Eadestown), Grace Clifford (Eadestown); Lara Curran (Milltown), Nessa Dooley (Castledermot), Aoife Rattigan (Cappagh), Ellen Dowling (Suncroft), Orlaith Sullivan (Carbury), Mikaela McKenna (Na Fianna).
