FROM next year there will be an added game in the KDFL calendar in the name of the sadly deceased photographer Adrian Melia.
As Senior Division and Lumsden Cup champions Suncroft and Clonmullion will contest the first ever Adrian Melia Charity Shield next year as a curtain raiser before the 2020 season.
The game will become an annual event between the champions of the two biggest competitions in the league it and it will honour one of the most popular figures in the history of the KDFL.
The charismatic photographer was a regular on sidelines the length and breath of the county from the first season of the league in 1994 until his untimely death in November 2017. Adrian was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and battled the disease with typical humour and determination until his body could take no more. He continued to work and cover many sports throughout the county despite his illness and typically of him, left his sickbed to cover a KDFL match less than 48 hours before he passed away.
The photographer is already immortalised within the KDFL and at the league’s awards night in the Keadeen Hotel at the end of November there will again be presentation of the Adrian Melia Photo of the Year. Previously, Adrian picked his favourite photo that he had taken throughout the season but the award is now picked by a panel and is their favourite picture submitted by the many photographers who cover their own club’s games.
It is fantastic that Adrian Melia’s name should live on within the KDFL in this way.
