PERMISSION has been granted by Kildare Co Council to Minch Malt Limited, trading as Boortmalt, for the construction of a malt production process building (Nordon Steeps Building) along the northeastern boundary of the site ‘as a replacement of the existing building that has collapsed; a canopy and a 500cu mm water storage tank’.

That collapse happened during the afternoon of Tuesday 30 July 2019, with aerial photos taken at the time showing debris scattered on the site near its boundary with the Kilkenny road. It was reported that nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

Permission had been applied for in September and the decision to grant was made by the council on Wednesday 6 November.

A submission made by the Kildare branch of Birdwatch Ireland asked that a peregrine falcon nest box be included in an appropriate location as peregrine falcons ‘have frequently been observed in the vicinity of the proposed development site but there is an absence of suitable nesting sites in this area’.
