THERE is no provision in the current year’s budget to install lighting around the site of the Naas skate park or to meet the running costs, local councillors have been informed.
Cllr Seamie Moore had asked for confirmation from the council if it has any plans or costings to install such lights ‘as skaters are now back using town centre sites during the long and dark evenings because the designated site is unlit’.
Cllr Moore explained that he had been shocked to see young people back skating at the courthouse and that they said they couldn’t go to the park as there are no lights. The report issued in response to his question added that no costings have been sought for lighting at the skate park and there have been no previous requests for this. The downside to providing lighting, it was noted, is that ‘it can attract anti-social behaviour’.
However, regarding the latter point Cllr Moore said that it doesn’t carry any weight. “I’m asking that they reconsider the lighting requirement,” he said.
