A driver stopped on the M7 yesterday afternoon by Naas Roads Policing Unit had an address in Cavan and shouldn’t have been on the road.

“The driver was not only found to be disqualified by using our Mobility App but was a long way from home!” Kildare Garda Division explained.

The car was seized and court proceedings are to follow for road traffic offences.

Operation Fanacht, a major policing operation, is underway, designed to ensure public compliance with Covid-19 travel restrictions over the next few days.

Gardaí are asking people to only travel for essential reasons this weekend, keep within a 2km radius of their home for exercise, and to practice social distancing and hand washing.

A number of checkpoints have already been conducted in Kildare, including in Newbridge and Prosperous, and a few cars have had to be turned around. Gardaí say that they have heard of people alerting other motorists to these checkpoints by flashing their lights, something they say is unacceptable.

“These checkpoints are being done to protect us all,” Kildare Garda Division explained. “This form of behaviour poses a risk to the community, is reckless and totally unacceptable.”
