The RTE Investigates documentary which brought us inside the Covid 19 wards at St James Hospital should be compulsory viewing for anyone who is becoming even the slightest bit complacent about the reality of this virus.
Each day we report on the statistics, how many new cases there are, how many deaths they have been but this programme brought us face to face with the people …the real people behind these figures and the kind, caring staff who looked after them with such absolute love and dignity.
It wasn’t easy viewing. It was emotional and I watched it with tears streaming down my face as we saw Patrick lose his battle and Joe finally win his.
On a day when we celebrated hairdressers and restaurants and gyms and other businesses and facilities re-opening this is a stark reminder of what Covid 19 is and puts into context just what really matters at the end of the day.
This was public broadcasting at its very best and congratulations to the programme-makers but our thoughts, more importantly, go to the families of those who have died, and the staff who care for them.
If you didn’t see the programme you must look it up on the RTE Player and watch it.
The second part of the documentary is on tomorrow night after the 9pm news.
And if you are getting even the smallest bit complacent please do think again.
We owe it to all those who have suffered and survived and we owe it to all those who have passed away
