Maynooth University Town 2 (Deegan 66, Duffy 77)
Newbridge Town 1 (Delahunty 41)
By Robert Cribbin
Newbridge Town and Maynooth University Town returned to action after a three week enforced absence and it was the North Kildare side that claimed the win at Station Road in the Leinster Senior League on Wednesday evening.
Despite there being no spectators present due to the current Government restrictions it still proved to be a very enjoyable game with both teams giving it everything in the chase for crucial league points.
Newbridge led through a Conor Delahunty goal before the break but it did come against the run of play to an extent and Maynooth fought back in the second period with Darragh Deegan and Cillian Duffy netting to give the visitors a big win.
Newbridge had the odd chance to get a late equaliser but it was only a fleeting threat and Maynooth in the end rather comfortably secured the win.
From the off Maynooth were in control with their midfield dictating proceedings but the lack of killer instinct at the top end of the field really dented their scoring opportunities.
On more than one occasion Maynooth got behind the Newbridge defence but they couldn’t finish off the bright play beforehand.
Newbridge were always in the game when Maynooth failed to rattle the net though and with the University goalkeeper Shane Fagan flapping at a couple of crosses into the box that uncertainty eventually led to the opening goal with Conor Delahunty taking advantage of a mistake from a routine ball into the danger area by finishing to an empty goal.
That gave Jamie Quinn’s side a 1-0 lead at the break but they couldn’t really build on it at the resumption with Maynooth hitting back.
The barrenness on the scoresheet for Maynooth ended halfway through the half however when Cillian Duffy drilled a ball into the box which Deegan controlled before finishing in style to level up matters.
The assist for the leveller clearly gave Duffy confidence and he put Maynooth in front with a wonderful goal in the 77th minute when he cut in from the sideline and inside two defenders before finding the top corner of the Newbridge net from the edge of the box.
Newbridge huffed and puffed in the final minutes but they couldn’t force a goal as Maynooth claimed success in the all Kildare clash.
