By Lorna Merrins

AFTER a four-week layoff, Nurney and Allenwood took to the field on Tuesday evening in Monasterevin for the second round of the Intermediate Football Championship.

Allenwood got on the scoreboard in the first minute with a point from Darragh Malone. Nurney responded with two points from Andy Behan and Mikey Conway.

In the 10th minute, a well worked build up resulted in Cathal Hagney hitting the back of the net for Nurney, putting them three points ahead. Both teams traded points throughout the first half with Allenwood scoring two frees from Johnny Doyle, followed by a long-range point from Johnny Byrne.

By the first water break Nurney led 1-3 to 0-5. The remainder of the first half was a close affair with Mikey Conway and Johnny Doyle scoring at either end to leave Nurney in front 1-7 to 0-9 at half time.

The second half started once again with a point from Darragh Malone (Allenwood) inside the first minute. Allenwood’s Darren Judge then put two excellent points on the board in quick succession, which was followed by a Mikey Conway free for Nurney after a foul on Tadhg Hagney. Just before the second water break, Nurney’s Andy Behan pointed from a mark, leaving just one point between the teams.

The last 15 minutes once again saw an exchange of points from both sides. It also included a unique occurrence as Johnny Doyle was sent to the line in the 56th minute after receiving a second yellow card.

Nurney then tightened the lead to one point with an Andy Behan free. With only a minute to go, Nurney dug deep and attacked at pace. Eoghan Fitzpatrick found himself at the end of the attack and made no mistake, hitting the back of the net, clenching victory for Nurney.

This result means that all four teams in the group are on two points each, leaving it all to play for in the final round of group games at the weekend
