Pittman Traffic IFC Group C – Round 2

LEIXLIP             4-14

RATHANGAN:  1-9

By Eoin Beatty

LEIXLIP bounced back from the Round 1 defeat at the hands of St Kevin’s to comfortably overcome Rathangan in Robertstown on Tuesday night and keep their hopes of advancing from the group stage in this year’s championship well and truly alive.

Played under floodlights as the evenings begin to shorten, it took five minutes for the opening score of the game to arrive, coming from the boot of Aran Teahan to give Rathangan a lead they would soon relinquish and never regain reclaim.

Leixlip responded by hitting the next five points without reply through Tommy Moolick (2), Ciaran Fadian, Sean Englishby and Niall White respectively, before Rathangan pulled one back thanks to a Brian Mulally free.

The men in maroon however, were firmly in the driving seat and racked up a further 2-4 before the half time break with the goals coming from Paddy Meagher, after a neat one-two with Neil Jordan, and Tommy Moolick, pouncing on some lacklustre defending to fire home from close range.

The score at the break was 2-9 to 1-3 with Rathangan’s goal coming courtesy of a fantastic, improvised backheel finish from Brian Mulally.

The second half was much the same as the first and Leixlip, playing against the wind, began to utilise Tommy Moolick who moved from midfield into the full-forward line.

Moolick raised his second green flag of the game along with an excellently taken goal by corner-forward Neil Jordan, who was a constant threat throughout, gave the scoreboard a comprehensive look to it at full time.

Rathangan themselves did have some good spells throughout the course of the evening and showed glimpses of their spirited performance in Round 1 that pushed Clogherinkoe all the way, but even some fantastic points from Aran Teahan proved little consolation.

The pace of Leixlip’s attacks and precision of their finishing, particularly from the aforementioned Moolick, Jordan and Meagher, ensured that they remain in with a chance of progressing from the group stage of this year’s Pittman Traffic IFC.
