For Culture Night 2020 (Friday 18 September), Athy Sign and Sign Club celebrated Irish Sign Language and their new boxing ballerina mural in the town by creating a short film of members signing the song ‘Something Inside So Strong’ by Labi Siffre.
If you missed it, don’t worry – the video is available on the Kildare Arts Service YouTube channel!
Talented local filmmaker Michael Aldridge worked with the group to create the film; Athy Sign and Sign members alongside special guests Patricia Berry, Veralouise Behan and Raymond Harris joined together to sign the song.
The film also features a special dance by two ballerinas who are also members of the Athy club, Sarah Taaffe and Maria Lawler; they danced in front of the magnificent ballerina mural.
The boxing ballerina wears a hearing aid and the mural is accompanied by the word ‘strong’ in text and ISL alphabet, promoting inclusiveness. This mural epitomises strength and beauty and they sought to deliver that message through the short film.
