GARDAÍ in Athy have suspended a search in the River Barrow this evening (Sunday) after a tragic accident earlier in the day left one man missing.
The incident occurred this afternoon at Ardreigh Lock, about two kilometers south of the town, off the Carlow Road.
A passerby was drawn to calls from the river where a man was holding a child above the water.
The passerby entered the water and took the child from the man in the water, and brought the child to safety at the bank, unfortunately when the Good Samaritan returned to rescue the man he had disappeared.
The alarm was raised and a co-ordinated search was begun with Gardaí, the Civil Defence and a local kayaking club, which searched unsuccessfully until dusk.
A garda spokesperson confirmed that the missing man was local, but could not give any further details at this stage, except to confirm the search would resume “at first light”.
The garda also wanted to acknowledge the selfless bravery of the young man who entered the river to help rescue the child, whose details are also being withheld at the moment.
