GARDAÍ in Athy are focusing on a four kilometer stretch of the Barrow in their continuing search for a man who went missing yesterday (28 February).

The Garda Water Unit is leading the search between Ardreigh Lock and Malone’s Weir on the river, alongside the Athy Canoe Club and a private boat, with Civil Defence units from Kildare, Laois and Dublin assisting along both banks.

They suspended the search in the River Barrow yesterday evening (Sunday) at dusk but resumed early this morning.

The incident occurred at Ardreigh Lock, about two kilometers south of the town, off the Carlow Road.

A passerby was drawn to calls from the water where a man was holding a child above the water.

The passerby entered the water and took the child from the man in the water, and brought the child to safety at the bank, unfortunately when the Samaritan returned to rescue the man he had disappeared.
