IN his column in this week’s Kildare Nationalist, Niall “Slippers” Madden marked our cards for the Big Races at this week’s Cheltenham Festival and the former Aintree Grand National winner returned  a hattrick of wins from his predictions on Day 1 at Prestbury Park.

Hattrick of wins from Kildare Nationalist columnist, Niall “Slippers” Madden on Cheltenham Day 1

In fact “Slippers” went agonisingly close to making it a fourtimer when his prediction for the Close Brothers Mares Hurdle, the Willie Mullins trained, Concertista, just lost on the line to Black Tears ridden by Jack Kennedy and now trained by Sneezy Foster, the last Grade 1 of the day.

The hattrick came in the opening three Grade 1’s with “Slippers” predictions, Appreciate It, Shishkin and Honeysuckle, all obliging for the punters.

Paul Townend led Appreciate It home an 8/11 fav in the opening Supreme Novices Hurdle followed by Shishkin who romped in a 4/9 chance in the Arkle Novices Chase.

Rachel Blackmore then made history by becoming the first female jockey to win the Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy when, as predicted by “Slippers”, Honeysuckle matched the favourtie’s tag in winning at 11/10.
