ERIC “Lilywhite Lightening” Donovan’s mandatory challenge for the EU has been confirmed for Friday night, 14 May, the Athy native confirmed to the Kildare Nationalist on Thursday.
Eric will take on Italian, Mario Alfano in the city of Brescia in the Lombardy district of Northern Italy, for the European Union’s super featherweight crown.
Donovan, whose warm up fight in Belgium was cancelled at the last minute because of Covid issues with his opponent, has been looking forward to this bout for some time and it comes on the back of his great performance in just losing to Zelfa Barrett before the TV cameras last August.
In his 14 fights Eric Donovan has a record of 13 wins, seven inside the distance with just the one loss to Barrett and even at 36 is one of Ireland’s and Kildare’s exciting fighters at this time.
The “Lilywhite Lightening” was lined to fight Haithem Laamouz for the title but the Maltese fighter, was suspended for testing positive for a banned substance earlier this year.
Donovan is now managed by the Belfast based, Mark Dunlop, and has taken on a new coach, Packie Collins, brother of Steve Collins, the former WBO title holder, in recent times.
