Celebrations are in order for Kildare’s Maynooth University Disney Society, after they took home the top award at the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) virtual awards ceremony last Thursday. The society were awarded the title of Best Society in a Cultural, Academic, or Social field for a large college, beating societies from TUD, DCU, UL, NUIG, and UCC.
Society President, Megan Maguire was ecstatic with the win “I’m so proud of the recognition we’ve been given on a national level. It hasn’t been an easy year for University students, and we’re delighted to have been able to spread the magic across Maynooth and beyond to our members, despite the obstacles the pandemic threw at us”.
This is the first time Maynooth University has taken home this award since 2008. Disney Society also took home the title of Best Fresher in Ireland at BICS last year.
The judges commended the immense work and commitment of the society over the past year. “The judges were hugely impressed with your passion and genuine care for not only your members, but for everyone looking to interact with you” commented Orlagh Fleming, TUD Tallaght.
Maynooth University Disney Society is a student-led community of over 400 members. Each year, the society provide innovative and engaging events and activities to students at Maynooth University. With 10 awards for their work over the past 3 years, the society have gone from strength to strength. The society are proud to raise money for charity and give back to local communities across Ireland. This year, some highlights included a virtual escape room for all Maynooth University students, creating and emailing an activity book to residents in every nursing home in Ireland, and a virtual trip to Disneyland Paris.
