SUSIE Sapphire has come a long way since making her debut in Newbridge on the 4 March this year. A debut that seen her slow away and finish last of six runners. Just six months later she finds herself a Puppy Oaks Champion, a Sporting Press Irish Oaks champion and the biggest one of the all, a Derby Champion.

Susie is trained by Owen McKenna and owned by a gentleman of the game in Peter Comerford who lives in Ballyteague. Peter also bred the bitch as he owned her dam Jetstream Lynx who he sold to England and got back for breeding. Peter is a regular at Newbridge Greyhound Stadium and a popular figure within the sport. He puts so much into the game and has finally been rewarded in the best way possible. He’s had many good dogs go through his hands over the years but none better than Susie Sapphire.
She went unbeaten through her Derby campaign which is a remarkable achievement when you consider she’s been taking on the best greyhounds around for six weeks in a row. What’s even more remarkable is she made all the running in every round, never to see another rival. She delivered every single week but she kept her best performance for the final as she put up a superb display to win by three lengths in a brilliant time of 29.18.
Not sure when and where we’ll see her next but wherever it is she’ll no doubt attract a big crowd as she’s a very very special greyhound who has captured the hearts of many in her short career so far.
