AN Old Aged pensioner accused of possession of €23,400 worth of drugs with intent to supply had his bail conditions eased to allow him to babysit his grandchild.

The 66-year-old man was charged with possession with intent to supply after gardaí allegedly discovered €18,000 of cocaine (c. 200g) and €5,400 worth of cannabis (approx. 300g) following a search 4 February last year.

He made no formal reply when the charge was put to him earlier, according to the investigating officer.

Sergeant Brian Jacob then told Judge Patricia Cronin that the State had no objection to bail, but that it was to be set at €5,000 because “we want to focus minds”.

He sought conditions that he sign on three time a week at the garda station, be contactable on the phone 24/7, and observe a 9am-9pm curfew.

On hearing this the investigating garda asked that the curfew be extended until maybe 10pm because the defendant babysat his grandchild regularly and the sergeant generously pushed this to 11pm.

Judge Cronin then remanded him on continuing bail, to re-appear at Naas District Court on 2 June for a Book of Evidence, and assigned legal aid.
