The attendance at the Great Famine Remembrance Service in St Mary’s Cemetery in Athy where the Famine dead are buried

THE 1,205 people who died in Athy’s workhouse during the Famine were remembered at the Great Famine Remembrance Service which took place in St Mary’s Cemetery in Athy on Sunday 15 May at 3pm. The service was led by Fr Liam Rigney, Parish Priest St Michael’s Athy with readings by John Roche (O.N.E) and Cllr Aoife Breslin.
Those in attendance were reminded of the workhouse inmates who died in Athy’s workhouse during the famine and whose remains were buried in unmarked graves in St Mary’s Cemetery. The service ended with expressions of thanks to the Garda Siochana Pensioners Association represented by Tom and Noeleen Friel who presented flowers for the occasion and to Denis Ryan who cut the grass in the cemetery in preparation for the service.”
