The population of Ireland has topped 5 million according to the Census 2022 results published today. The country’s population stood at 5,123,536 people on Census night 2022, compared to 4,761,865 in 2016, an increase of 11%.

Kildare continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in the country. Its population has grown from 222,504 in 2016 to 246,977 in Census 2022 an increase of 7.6%

The county’s housing stock has also grown over the past six yers. There are currently 89,668 homes counted in the county as compared to 80,158 in 2016, an increase of 11,9%.

The housing vacancy rate has also grown from 4,560 in 2016 to 4,797. Vacant homes are identified by the census enumerators  if it is unoccupied on Census night, is not used as a holiday home and is not usually inhabited by occupants who are temporarily absent at the time of the census. A dwelling being classified as vacant for census purposes does not necessarily imply that it is available for re-use
