A man was asked at a local district court what his new-born baby’s name was, only to reply with an “umm”.

It came about when the man came before Portlaoise District Court for driving while uninsured and having no driving licence on the Stradbally Road, Portlaoise on 6 March.

Defending solicitor Aonghus McCarthy said that, on the day, his client was driving his wife to hospital to have their first baby.

The solicitor said his client had never been in trouble in his life.

Judge Michèle Finan told the 34-year-old defendant that he needed insurance to drive on the road, to which he replied: “She was having the baby and I had no one to call.”

Applying the Probation Act, Judge Finan asked the defendant, “What did you call the baby?”, to be met with an “umm” and laughter from the body of the courtroom.
