Kildare County Council is set to discuss new measures to tackle the ongoing issue of dog fouling in the municipal district of Athy.
The motion put forward by Cllr Mark Leigh called for a multi-agency meeting to address the persistent issue of dog fouling in the municipal district.
“I think we’ll all second that one,” said cathaoirleach Aoife Breslin.
“It seems dog fouling in Athy is a lot more common, the street is full of it,” said cllr Mark Leigh.
“We need a high profile campaign to handle this issue,” he continued, and mentioned bringing in dog waste bins, similar to other countries in Europe.
Cllr Brian Dooley, in agreement, said: “Dogs are getting blamed. It’s the owners!”
“It’s the ignorance of people. Pick up after your bloody dog," he concluded.
The proposal urges collaboration between relevant agencies to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat the problem, which has been a growing concern among residents.
In response, the council’s environment department has pledged its support for any initiatives that arise from the discussions.
However, the final decision on whether to proceed with the multi-agency approach now rests with council members.
