A UKRAINIAN teenager has created a beautiful mural at Newbridge College as a token of appreciation for her time at the school.

Yeva Muravchuk joined the college in Newbridge 2022. She and her mother Zorianna were forced to flee the Ukraine because of the war with Russia. Yeva completed her Leaving Certificate this year and got a place in NCAD studying art.

Walking out of her final exam Yeva told chaplain Fr Anthony Kavanagh OP that she was keen to give something back to the College as a token of appreciation for how the College had looked after her for the past two years. The idea of the mural was born.

Yeva took her time preparing the initial design and wanted to take in the Dominican ethos of the College as well as things of local significance. This explains the centrality of the Dominican Crest, the Crucifix, the lillies representing Kildare and the sheep reminding us of the Curragh plains. One of the most interesting parts of the piece is the stain glass which Yeva incorporated with great detail.

The same patterns of stain glass are present on campus in the College Chapel dedicated to St Eustace. For over four weeks day and night Yeva painstakingly worked on the mural.

The mural has received critical acclaim from artists both locally and national and even internationally at the summer gathering of the Gerard Manley Hopkins festival.
